Intel Corporation sponsored a study of 30 firms across various industries in order to learn about the relationship between desktop PC environment complexity and IT support costs. The study revealed:

- Complex PC environments tend to cost more to support than environments with fewer configurations.
- Reducing PC environment complexity can help companies deploy software 10 to 30 percent faster, without increasing resources.
- A three-year desktop PC lifecycle provides a good balance between the cost of managing PC environment complexity and the effective use of corporate capital.
