Gigabyte Technology* Case Study
High Performers Line Up on New DSS Platform

Summary
Motherboard developers often face the challenge of bridging legacy systems with newer solutions. In this case study, the migration from PCI to PCI Express* is presenting challenges for the digital security surveillance industry. Some component suppliers are choosing to stick with PCI, while new applications require the throughput of PCI Express. In this case study you'll learn how Gigabyte Technology*, Intel and others produced a high-performing motherboard that lets PCI-based devices achieve PCI Express-like performance.

Business Need
New digital surveillance applications range from facial recognition software to real-time, multi-channel monitoring systems. These new applications require high bandwidth platforms capable of transmitting high-definition (D1 resolution) video. The PCI Express interface is ideal for this level of performance across multiple channels. But video capturing device manufacturers are still committed to PCI-based designs with lower bandwidth, limiting the number of channels or resolution or both. For motherboard developers, the challenge is in building systems that are capable of supporting both the PCI-based video capturing cards and the newer, multi-channel, high-bandwidth DSS applications.
Solution
New Intel® Digital Security Surveillance Platform Technology includes the components necessary to run new surveillance applications while preserving the ability to operate with legacy devices. Gigabyte then used these elements to form a new application-ready motherboard specifically for DSS systems. Intel dual-core processors provide the performance needed to run the complex algorithms in many intelligent video surveillance applications, while the PCI Express-based Intel chipset allows connection of up to 16 channels of video capturing devices. The Intel® 41210 PCI-to-PCI Express bridge offers the extra bandwidth needed for multiple high-definition video channels. And the Intel® Matrix Storage system with RAID guarantees massive storage space and data redundancy-especially important in security and counter-terrorism applications.
