Analog Data I/O Solutions for Intel® 8xC196NP Microcontrollers

The Application Note discusses analog input and output peripherals and their interface to Intel's 8xC196Nx (Nx will refer to NP and NU devices throughout this application note) microcontrollers. The example of a EPA-based integrating ADC design shows an inexpensive way to build a high-resolution ADC. The serial and parallel interfaces to the Analog-to-Digital (ADC) and Digital-to-Analog (DAC) converters are explained. The advantages of the serial I/O ADCs and DACs as the analog front end for Intel microcontrollers are illustrated. The key role of the appropriate PCB layout and opto-isolated data interface for precision improvement is discussed.
