Specifications
This extremely flexible, high-availability platform is one of several modular telecom building blocks from Intel. It is built on the PICMG* 2.16 specification, providing OEM equipment designers with carrier-grade, standards-based solutions. Customers who demand high availability and low maintenance, but at the same time want to maximize processing density while minimizing hardware footprint and cost, will find this chassis well-suited to meet their exacting requirements for modular communications infrastructure applications.
Targeted for deployment in telecommunication network edge environments, the Intel NetStructure® MPCHC5089DC 12U General Purpose Packet Switched Platform is designed to meet the Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) Level 3 criteria. It is also designed to interoperate with the entire Intel NetStructure® family of packet switched backplane products, and with third-party boards meeting the PICMG 2.16 and IPMI 1.5 specifications.

The platform features built-in redundancy for active system components including Ethernet switches, Chassis Management Modules (CMMs), power supplies and fan trays. Redundant CMMs help enable customers to manage all boards in the chassis and to remotely diagnose and manage problems, enhancing system reliability. In addition to these high-availability features, the platform is easily serviceable.
The Intel NetStructure MPCHC5089DC platform routes Ethernet signals across the backplane without the use of cables. This helps save time in setup, maintenance and repair, and minimizes the thermal challenges of traditional cabling methods. It has been designed for maximum airflow and highpower delivery with powerful fan trays and fully redundant (N+N) 350W power supplies-the industry's first IPMI-managed power supplies.

| Chassis Management Modules |
The Intel NetStructure MPCHC5089DC platform includes two redundant Intel NetStructure® ZT 7102 Chassis Management Modules (CMMs) that operate in active/standby mode. The ZT 7102 CMM is the central management component for all Intel NetStructure PICMG 2.16-compliant platforms. Its primary function is to support the operational integrity and reliability of the chassis and its components, and to deliver five-nines (99.999) availability.
The Intel NetStructure ZT 7102 CMM communicates with boards in the platform via point-to-point IPMB busses in a unique hybrid-star topology. It uses standards-based interfaces to achieve comprehensive, highly available management of any IPMI-based board within an Intel NetStructure® platform.

| Redundant Power Domain Architecture |
|
 |
|
The Intel NetStructure MPCHC5089DC platform supports a redundant, high-power solution that accommodates up to eight 350W 3U CompactPCI power supplies and provides up to 50W per node slot and 70W per fabric slot.
For enhanced high availability, and to isolate catastrophic events, both the backplane and midplane are divided into two power domains. The power domains on the backplane support N+N redundant power supplies and receive input power from redundant DC inputs. Isolation of these inputs is maintained to ensure that failure of one will not affect the power input of the other. Similarly, each power domain on the midplane supports one fabric slot and nine node slots. The redundant CMMs and fan trays draw power from both domains to provide continued operation, should one domain fail.

The platform houses three high-capacity, hot-swappable fan trays, serviceable from the front. Each tray includes three blowers, and spans the distance from the front to the back of the chassis. The front two blowers cool the front card cage area, and the rear blower cools the power supplies and the rear area of the card cage.
