Can code or data be locked within the L2 Cache of the processor?
Based on current architecture, this is not possible.
How does an Intel® Pentium® 4-based system with ICH2 use the internal APIC Controller?
Pentium 4-based systems now follow the xAPIC protocol. With xAPIC, all transactions occur across Hublink Interface and Front Side Bus, not the previously dedicated three wire bus like in Pentium III-based system.
For more information, please review Chapter 8 of the Intel® 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer's Manuals. This provides a description on how to use the xAPIC on a Pentium 4 system.
Why are the package lengths for BCLK[1:0] and Common clock signals not included in the Design Guide? Please reference section 4.1 of the 4 Processor in 478-Pin Package and Intel® 845E Chipset Platform for DDR Design Guide. It states, "No length compensation is necessary" for the Common Clock line lengths. Section 4.2.2.1 also states "Common clock signals should be routed to a minimum pin-to-pin motherboard length of 3.0 inches and a maximum motherboard length of 10 inches."
Please reference section 11.2.1 of the same design guide. Table 11-3 provides all the necessary routing requirements for BCLK[1:0]. Note 1 states that "The skew budget includes... clock skew due to interconnect process variation," which is internal skew due to package length. As long as these guidelines are followed, the package lengths are unnecessary.
What is the difference between "2" GHz and "2A" GHz?
2 GHz processors are based on the older .18µ process technology. 2A GHz processors are based on the new .13µ process technology. Currently the Pentium 4 2A GHz processor is supported for embedded designs."
