Internet connectivity now puts all of us in touch with people, information, and events all over the globe. It removes boundaries, changes relationships, and redefines our businesses and lives.

We are on the threshold of another profound development in the evolution of the Internet. At Intel we call it the Embedded Internet, a network space where billions of intelligent embedded devices will connect with larger computing systems and with each other—many of them communicating machine-to-machine, without the need for human intervention.

You can explore a small sample of these new usage models on this Web site.

Generations of new intelligent devices will carry your ideas further into the embedded world than has ever been possible before, in the form of self-configuring networks of wireless “motes,” smart factory robots, personalized in-vehicle infotainment systems, mobile medical diagnostic tools, and intelligent shopping carts. Billions of these devices will do for the embedded world what the Internet has accomplished for human beings—transcend boundaries, invent new functions, and redefine the way we live and work.

As an industry, we face the amazing challenge of creating an era of embedded communications that will enable embedded devices to stay in constant contact with each other. We must develop the necessary standards and remove the proprietary boundaries that have historically prevented us from achieving a truly global wireless communications network. Wireless connectivity must become pervasive and seamless.

While the challenge is great, the opportunities are equally exhilarating. If there is any problem that can be solved by intelligent processing, persistent Internet-based connectivity, and the application of Internet-compatible standards—the solution is now coming within our reach.

I can promise you that Intel will do our part by extending the breakthrough performance and energy efficiency of our embedded product line, by working with the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance and industry standards bodies, and by providing you with unprecedented access to development tools and information online through the new Intel® Embedded Design Center.

Extending the goodness of the Internet to the embedded space will have far-reaching implications that we have only begun to imagine. Making it happen will be the ride of a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Doug Davis
