  • 75% of TOP 500 'Supercomputers' Now Intel-based
    June 18, 2008

The just released TOP 500 Supercomputing ranking list verifies that the wide majority of today's systems are based on Intel® multi-core processors and able to evaluate and calculate large volumes of data and complex algorithms very rapidly. 375 or 75 percent of the ranked supercomputers are based on Intel® processors -- more than ever before. In the year 2000, only four – yes four – systems were based on Intel architecture, illustrating just how rapidly the leading processor architecture for supercomputers has been embraced. Intel's push into quad-core based systems is also well represented. In just over one and a half years since the first quad core processor, more than half (257 systems) now contain four-brained Intel chips.

  • EDN Awards: Intel 45nm Team 'Innovators of Year'
    April 15, 2008

EDN Award Winners Last night at the EDN 18th Annual Innovation Awards in San Jose, Calif., the Intel 45nm innovation team took home EDN's top award – Innovator of the Year. Check out photos of the give-aways from the banquet last night – photos of members of Intel's 45nm grace the front of playing cards. The EDN Innovator of the Year award recognizes an electronics engineer or engineering team for innovation in product design or technical leadership. Last year, Intel announced a breakthrough in transistor technology with the innovative use of a combination of new materials – called high-k and metal gate -- that drastically reduces transistor leakage and increases performance in its 45nm process technology. Intel has already shipped millions of its 45nm processors made with these new materials, including the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 quad-core processor, which also won an award in the "multicore processor" category. Intel's 45nm invention is also behind the new line of Intel Atom Processors. Congratulations to the Intel winners!

  • Intel's Multicore Processors and Robotics, Automation
    April 9, 2008

During the international Hanover Fair in Germany (April 21- 25), Intel, along with Microsoft and Beckhoff Automation, will present on the potential of modern automation technology that Intel multicore processors can help bring to life. The live demonstration in the Application Park (Hall 17, Booth D26) takes place under the motto: "PC Control - Open Platform for Advanced Automation". While the PC is already one of the most flexible and powerful systems today, as processor power increases it could also someday control many other tasks in for programmable logic controllers, motion and human machine interfaces. This means that special functions, such as vision, robotics and measurement technology, which today are usually implemented as special hardware units, will soon become part of the ever-growing software PLC.
