Why don't the Serial ATA cables fit my Serial Attached SCSI hard disk drive?

The SAS/SATA cables included with some Intel® Server Boards or Chassis may be used for direct cabling to SATA drives or to connect to SAS or SATA backplanes. These cables are not intended for connecting directly from the server board to a SAS drive.

While both SATA and SAS share the same cabling, the connectors on SAS drives are keyed so that SAS drives cannot easily be cabled to SATA only ports. Cables for direct connection (usually providing both power and data in a single cable) are not provided by Intel.

This applies to:
Intel® Server Board S5000PAL
Intel® Server Board S5000PSL
Intel® Server Board S5000VCL
Intel® Server Board S5000VSA
Intel® Server Board S5000XAL
Intel® Server Board S5000XSL
Intel® Workstation Board S5000XVN
