On an Intel® S5000 chipset based server board with Intel® Embedded Server RAID Technology II (software RAID mode) enabled on the SAS 106x controller (enabled in BIOS and by drivers), no more than 8 drives (even as spare) can be used.
Use of more than 8 drives at any time while Software RAID enabled on the SAS controller is specifically NOT supported.
