Intel® Pocket Concert™ Audio Player
Troubleshooting USB Connection Problems for the Audio Player

If the Intel® Audio Manager software displays "The Intel® Pocket Concert™ Audio Player is not currently connected to this PC" when indeed it is plugged in via the USB port, the drivers may not be properly installed.

For the Intel Pocket Concert Audio Player to connect and work properly, your computer must have three items installed and properly configured:

  • USB Host Controller
  • USB Root Hub
  • Intel® Audio Player
To evaluate your driver installation:
  1. Go to your computer's Device Manager:
    In Windows* 98 and Windows Me:
    1. Click Start » Settings » Control Panel.
    2. Double-click System.
    3. Click the Device Manager tab.

    In Windows* 2000:
    1. Click Start » Settings » Control Panel.
    2. Double-click System.
    3. Select the Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager.

  2. Click the "+" next to Universal Serial Bus controllers. You should see:
    USB Host Controller and USB Root Hub
    Note: The manufacturer and model of your USB Host Controller may vary.

  3. Click the "+" next to Intel Audio Player Class. You should see:
    Intel Audio Player
What did you find?

There is NOT a category for Universal Serial Bus Controller.

If there are no USB devices listed anywhere in Device Manager, your computer's USB port may not be enabled. The USB port must be enabled and properly configured for you to use the Intel® Pocket Concert™ Audio Player.

Enable the USB port by running your computer's BIOS Setup program. In many systems, the BIOS Setup program is run by pressing the F1 Key or the Delete key as soon as your computer starts to boot. If you are unsure how to run the computer's BIOS Setup program for your computer, consult the documentation that came with your computer or contact your computer manufacturer.

In the BIOS Setup program, locate the USB configuration settings section. This may be found under the Input/Output Ports configuration menu or the Peripheral Setup option. Consult the documentation that came with your computer or contact your computer manufacturer if you need further assistance.

Save the new BIOS settings. Your computer will restart. After Windows starts with the USB port enabled, the Update Hardware Device Driver Wizard launches. Click Next through each screen of the wizard and click Finish on the final screen.

Note: There have been some cases where a computer has the physical USB ports, but BIOS does not support them. You'll need to contact your computer manufacturer to upgrade the BIOS.

A host controller is listed, but there is NOT a USB Root Hub.

If, in the Universal Serial Bus Controller category, a host controller is listed, but there is NOT a USB Root Hub, you may have a partial or corrupted USB installation. Try resolving this problem with the following steps:
  1. In Device Manager, click the "+" in front of Universal Serial Bus Controller.

  2. Select the USB Host Controller device.

  3. Click the Remove button.

  4. Click the Refresh button. Windows will redetect the hardware and should find both the Host Controller and the Root Hub. Follow the prompts in the hardware wizard.
Note: You may be asked to insert the Windows installation CD.

If the USB Root Hub still does not appear in Device Manager, contact the manufacturer of your computer for assistance.


The Audio Player is listed in the wrong category in Device Manager.

Normally, the Intel® Pocket Concert™ Audio Player will appear either in the Intel® Digital Audio Player Class category in Device Manager as "Intel® Digital Audio Player". In rare cases the audio player may be listed incorrectly:
  • In the Universal Serial Bus Controller category as "USB Composite Device"

  • In the Other Devices category as "Audio Player0" and "Audio Player1" (2 entries)

  • In the Other Devices category as "Composite USB Device"

  • In the Other Devices category as "Digital Audio Player"

  • In the Intel® Digital Audio Player Class as "MI_0 Intel Digital Audio Player" and "MI_1 Intel Digital Audio Player" (2 entries)

If the player is listed incorrectly in Device Manager, you may have an incomplete or corrupted installation of the audio player drivers. Try resolving this problem with the following steps:
  1. Connect your player to your computer.

  2. Select the incorrect item(s) that represents the Player in Device Manager.

  3. Click Remove.

  4. Click Refresh. (Windows detects the hardware.)

  5. Follow the prompts in the hardware wizard.
If the Remove/Refresh does not resolve the problem, you'll need to manually update the driver:
  1. Connect your Player to your computer.

  2. Insert your Player CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

  3. If the Setup application starts, select Exit.

  4. Go to your computer's Device Manager.

  5. Click the "+" sign next to Universal Serial Bus controllers.

  6. Select USB Composite Device.

  7. Select Properties.

  8. Select the Driver tab.

  9. Select Update Driver.

  10. Select Next.

  11. Select Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now.
    >
  12. Select Next.

  13. Select only Specify a location.

  14. Select Browse.

  15. Click the "+" sign next to your CD-ROM drive.

  16. Select the Win98 folder.

  17. Select OK.

  18. Select Next.

  19. Select Next. (Your computer finds and installs the necessary files.)

  20. Select Finish.

  21. Select Close.

  22. Select OK.

  23. Restart your computer.

The Host Controller and USB Root Hub are listed, but the audio player is NOT.

If the USB Host Controller and the USB Root Hub both appear in the USB Serial Bus Controller category but the audio player is not detected, either of the following conditions may be the cause:

The USB port may be defective.
If the USB port device is implemented by a riser card, the cable from the card to the motherboard may not be connected properly.

Suggestions:
Try installing a DIFFERENT USB device on your computer.
  • If another USB device also DOES NOT WORK on your computer, it's likely that one of the above conditions is the cause of the problem. Contact the manufacturer of your computer for assistance.

  • If another USB device works ok on your computer, the audio player or USB cable may be defective. Contact Intel Customer Support for assistance.
Try installing the audio player on a different computer that supports USB devices.
  • If the audio player works on a different computer, it's likely that one of the above conditions is the cause of the problem on your computer. Contact the manufacturer of your computer for assistance.

  • If the audio player also DOES NOT WORK on a different computer, the player or USB cable may be defective. Contact Intel Customer Support for assistance.
