Intel® Active Management Technology
Intel® Active Management Technology is a hardware-based remote management mechanism that provides for remote access and management of networked embedded systems - even those that lack a working operating system or hard drive, or are turned off.
Operating system software or firmware can be accessed and reconfigured remotely, allowing system managers to implement features and solve numerous system issues without on-site visits. Hardware problems can be identified and diagnosed remotely, ensuring that an on-site repair visit can be made with the proper part(s) in hand.
Benefits can include faster fixes, increased availability, round-the-clock support, and a reduction in the cost of service-level agreements. These benefits apply across the network infrastructure and to a variety of network-connected devices, including industrial controllers, communications appliances and point-of-service terminals, as long as those systems are based on Intel architecture with built-in Intel Active Management technology.
Remote Manageability - Three Ways
Discover: Intel Active Management Technology stores platform-level hardware and software asset information in non-volatile memory on the platform. This allows system administrators to remotely take inventory of all networked computing and communications assets - including both software and hardware - even while the systems are powered off. With Intel Active Management Technology, remote management consoles do not rely on local software agents, helping to avoid accidental data loss. This ability to "discover" both software and hardware assets can help lower support costs and ensure that systems have the correct versions of applications, peripherals, and other assets installed.
Heal: Intel Active Management Technology provides out-of-band management capabilities that enable remote healing of the platform after operating system or application failures, eliminating the need for costly on-site repair visits. Hardware failures can be diagnosed remotely so that a truck rolls with the correct replacement part on board. Alerting and event logging helps administrators detect problems quickly to reduce downtime.
Protect: The Intel Active Management Technology system defense feature protects the network by proactively blocking incoming threats, reactively containing infected platforms before they can affect the network, and proactively alerting system administrators when critical software agents are removed. Third-party software can store version numbers or policy data in non-volatile memory for off-hours retrieval or updates.
Features and benefits
| Features | Benefits |
|---|---|
| Out-of-Band system access | Allows remote management of platforms regardless of system power or OS state |
| Remote trouble-shooting and recover | Significantly reduces on-site visits and truck rolls, increasing the efficiency of technical staff |
| Proactive alerting | Decreases downtime and minimizes time-to-repair |
| Remote HW and SW asset tracking | Increase speed and accuracy over manual inventory tracking, reducing asset accounting costs |
| Third-party nonvolatile storage | Increased speed and accuracy over manual inventory tracking, reducing asset accounting cost |
